Amico Infrastructure to begin site preparation for new Howe bridge

Amico Infrastructure has been awarded the first major contract for construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Dubbed the “early works” project, Amico will be responsible for site preparation for the new bridge on the Canadian side which includes construction of a new four-kilometre perimeter access road.

The company’s $59-million contract with the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority also includes utility relocation and drainage on the site for the planned Windsor-Detroit bridge to be located off Ojibway Parkway in Brighton Beach.

“Work will begin later this month with the installation of snake fencing,” said Heather Grondin, spokeswoman for the WDBA.

The site preparation work is separate from the actual bridge construction which will be carried out by a private sector partner not yet selected by WDBA, she said.

The downriver bridge is scheduled to open in 2020.

The new perimeter access road in Windsor will be within the footprint of the bridge plaza and replace the existing sections of Sandwich Street and Broadway Street that are to be closed once the bridge opens.
